What Teachers Learn
- Teaching with the CPA approach: moving from concrete objects to pictures to symbols, so pupils understand a method before they practise it.
- Bar models: drawing and using bar models to solve word problems, from Primary 1 to ratio in Primary 6.
- Lesson structure: how each textbook chapter and workbook section fit together.
- Using the Teacher's Guide: lesson notes, discussion questions and full answers for every chapter.
- Using the AI assessment and analytics: assigning work, reading the reports and deciding what to reteach.
Support Every Day in the Classroom
The Teacher's Guide supports teachers every day after training, with lesson plans, notes and full answers for every chapter from Primary 1 to 6.
The analytics show which learning objectives each class has mastered, so teachers know what to reteach. Every workbook question also has a worked solution video that shows how the method is explained.
How a Singapore Maths Lesson Is Structured
This is the lesson flow Explico recommends for teaching with Spartan Maths. It draws on the three phases of learning described in Singapore’s primary mathematics syllabus: readiness, engagement and mastery. It is a guide for planning, not a fixed format used by every school, and the time spent on each stage depends on the topic and the class.
| Order | Stage | Purpose | Teacher action or prompt | Pupil action | How understanding is checked | Resource |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Get ready | Recall the skills the lesson builds on | Pose two or three short questions on the previous topic. "What do we already know that could help?" | Answer and explain briefly | Quick answers on mini whiteboards or orally | Previous lesson's work |
| 2 | Explore | Meet the new idea with objects and pictures | Present a problem in a familiar context and let pupils try it with objects or drawings | Work in pairs with manipulatives, then draw what they did | Pupils explain their method to a partner or the class | Textbook teaching pages, where a textbook is available; manipulatives |
| 3 | Connect | Link the pictures to numbers and symbols | Work through the worked example, drawing the model and writing the number sentence. "Which part of the model shows this number?" | Record the model and the number sentence | Pupils point to where each number appears in the model | Textbook, where available; workbook Example; lesson video, where available |
| 4 | Practise | Build fluency, then apply the idea | Set guided practice, then independent work. Move round the class and question rather than tell | Complete workbook Practice questions | Teacher reads working, not just answers | Workbook Practice pages |
| 5 | Review | Consolidate and look ahead | Summarise the key point and link it to the next lesson. "What would you tell a friend who missed today?" | Explain the main idea in their own words | Short end-of-lesson question | None |
Supporting and stretching pupils. When pupils are stuck, the teacher goes back a step: to objects, to a simpler drawing or to smaller numbers. Pupils who are secure move on to the problem-solving pages in the workbook, which apply the same idea to harder, multi-step questions.
Using the digital resources. At levels where lesson videos are available, workbook questions in Explico’s digital books can link to the part of the video that teaches them, so pupils can review at home.
