Primary 6 Maths Topics List (Grade 6)
Primary 6 students study the Singapore Primary 6 syllabus across three strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics. Ratio, algebra and circles, brought together for the PSLE.
Number and Algebra
- Fractions: dividing by a whole number and by a fraction
- Ratio: equivalent ratios, simplifying, word problems
- Percentage: increase and decrease; finding the whole
- Algebra: expressions and simple linear equations
Measurement and Geometry
- Circles: area and circumference, semicircles, quarter circles
- Volume of cubes and cuboids
- Angles in composite geometric figures
Statistics
- Average: find the average, total or number of items
What changed in the updated syllabus: From 2026, Ratio and Average are taught in Primary 6, Speed has moved to Secondary 1, and Pie Charts and Nets are now taught in Primary 4. Explico's Singapore Maths follows this updated sequence.
Primary 6 Core Topics and Skills Compared
| Topic | Strand | What students learn | Common difficulty | How Explico helps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fractions | Number and Algebra | Divide a fraction by a whole number and by a fraction; word problems | Multiplying by the wrong reciprocal | Fraction models before the rule |
| Ratio | Number and Algebra | Equivalent and simplified ratios; fractions and ratio; word problems | Treating 3 : 5 as 3/5 of the whole | Unit bar models in every lesson |
| Percentage | Number and Algebra | Find the whole; percentage increase and decrease | Using the new amount as the base | A solution video for every workbook question |
| Algebra | Number and Algebra | Interpret expressions; solve simple linear equations; substitution | Seeing a letter as a label, not a number | Bar models that bridge to equations |
| Circles | Measurement and Geometry | Radius and diameter; area and circumference; composite figures | Leaving out straight edges in perimeter | Hands-on circle activities, then AI practice |
| Volume | Measurement and Geometry | Find a missing dimension, edge or base area; word problems | Water-level problems with two containers | Diagram-led worked solutions |
| Angles in geometric figures | Measurement and Geometry | Find unknown angles in composite figures | Stating the property behind each step | Maths Journal prompts to explain reasoning |
| Average | Statistics | Average, total and number of items; changing sets | Average after a value joins or leaves | AI assessment by learning objective |

How Singapore Maths Teaches Primary 6: The CPA Approach and Bar Models
Singapore Maths builds understanding before speed, moving from objects to pictures to symbols so students know why a method works.
Concrete: learn by handling
Students handle counters, cubes and fraction pieces before meeting a rule.
Pictorial: see the problem with bar models
The bar model turns a word problem into a diagram, showing how quantities relate before calculating.
Abstract: move to numbers and symbols
Once the meaning is secure, students work with symbols, including their first algebraic equations.
Problem-solving heuristics
Students follow a clear routine: understand, plan, solve, check, using heuristics like working backwards and spotting patterns.
Ali and Ben share stickers in the ratio 3 : 5. Ben has 24 more stickers than Ali. How many stickers do they have altogether?
- Draw 3 units for Ali and 5 units for Ben.
- The difference is 2 units, so 2 units = 24 and 1 unit = 12.
- Altogether they have 8 units: 8 × 12 = 96.
Answer: They have 96 stickers altogether.
Every workbook question has a worked solution video that explains the method in the same way.
The Complete Primary 6 Learning Suite
Every Primary 6 topic is supported by six connected parts: a textbook in print or eBook, a workbook, a worked solution video for every workbook question, AI assessment with gap analysis, a Teacher's Guide, and analytics for teachers and parents.
Built for Teachers and Schools
A classroom-ready Primary 6 programme with a teacher interface and school-level analytics, by class, topic and learning objective.
Teacher interface
Assign chapters, review auto-marked work, see who needs support.
School leader interface
Compare classes and cohorts, track syllabus coverage.
Flexible delivery, in English
Print, eBook or blended, all in English, for English-medium and international schools.
Preparing for the PSLE with Confidence
The PSLE Mathematics exam tests Primary 5 and Primary 6 content together, so Grade 6 revision must mix topics. From 2026 it has two papers of 50 marks each: Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with one.
Diagnose
A starting assessment finds gaps across Primary 5 and 6 topics.
Practise
Adaptive sets target the weakest learning objectives first.
Review
Solution videos correct errors on the same day.
Mock
Timed, mixed-topic papers build exam stamina and clear working.
For schools outside Singapore, the same cycle gives a PSLE-standard benchmark without sitting the PSLE.
Singapore ranked 2nd in the world for maths in PISA 2025 and 1st for Primary 4 (Grade 4) maths in TIMSS 2023. See the full PISA and TIMSS results.

Primary 6 Singapore Maths (Grade 6): Frequently Asked Questions
Is Primary 6 Singapore Maths the same as Grade 6?
Yes. Schools outside Singapore often say Grade 6, while Singapore schools say Primary 6. Explico's Singapore Maths for Primary 6 follows the MOE Singapore Primary 6 Mathematics syllabus for children aged 11 to 12, so the content, sequence and teaching approach are the same.
What topics are covered in Primary 6 Singapore Maths (Grade 6)?
Primary 6 covers fraction division, ratio, percentage increase and decrease, algebra with simple linear equations, circles, volume of cubes and cuboids, angles in composite figures, and average. Ratio and Average moved into Primary 6 under the updated syllabus, and Speed is no longer taught at primary level.
How does Primary 6 Singapore Maths prepare students for the PSLE?
The PSLE mixes Primary 5 and 6 topics in multi-step problems. Our AI assessment finds gaps across both years, adaptive practice targets them, solution videos correct errors quickly, and timed mixed-topic papers build exam stamina and clear working.
Can my child use Primary 6 Singapore Maths at home, in print or online?
Yes. The Primary 6 textbook and workbook come in print or as an eBook. Every workbook question has a worked solution video, so your child can check a method without waiting for a teacher. The AI assessment shows which topics need more practice, and you receive clear progress reports.
